Lexington police will help residents dispose of prescription drugs. Here’s where, when
The Lexington Police Department is partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration to host an event where people can properly dispose unwanted or expired prescription drugs for free.
The event will take place on Saturday, National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Kentucky American Water at 2300 Richmond Road. Police said this will be a no-questions-asked event.
“Cleaning out your medicine cabinet could help prevent theft, drug abuse, and potentially save a life,” LPD said in a news release.
Prescription and over-the-counter pills, vitamins, medicated ointments and lotions, and pet medication will be accepted. Items that won’t be accepted are liquids, aerosol cans and needles, according to police.
More information about take back day can be found at DEAtakeback.com or lexingtonky.gov/med-disposal. Kevin McWilliams, a spokesperson for the DEA, said prevention of prescription drug misuse and opioid addiction starts at home.
“At a time when opioid misuse remains at epidemic levels, safely and properly disposing of medications that are no longer needed is a very small act that can have a big impact on keeping prescription drugs out of the wrong hands,” McWilliams said. “DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is a great time for all of us to clean out our home medicine cabinets.”
Pharmacies and hospitals offer drop boxes where citizens can dispose of prescription medication year-round. Police said doing so properly can prevent drug abuse, theft and save lives.
