Louisville officer injured in mass shooting is off ventilator, back at UofL Hospital
Officer Nickolas Wilt, the rookie police officer injured in a mass shooting at a Louisville bank last month is breathing without the assistance of a ventilator and has been moved back to the University of Louisville Hospital.
The Louisville Metro Police Department said in an update posted on Facebook Tuesday night that “Officer Wilt’s lung condition is showing signs of improvement after spending a week and a half at Jewish Hospital”
He was moved back to UofL Hospital Tuesday “for monitoring by the trauma team in the ICU.”
“Although he’s doing better, he is still working on responding to commands,” the post stated.
Wilt is still listed in critical but stable condition, though the pneumonia that led to him being moved to Jewish Hospital last month “has become more manageable.”
“Over the past 24 hours, his oxygen saturation levels have consistently stayed within normal ranges without the assistance of ECMO or a ventilator,” the police department said in the post.
“We are excited about the recovery and fight being shown by Nick. Continue the prayers and positive thoughts.”
Wilt, 26, who has also worked as a firefighter and dispatcher, graduated from the police academy March 31 and was working his fourth shift as a police officer when he was shot in the head while responding to the shooting at Old National Bank on Main Street April 10. Seven other people were injured and six people died, including the shooter, who was shot by responding officers.
