A replica of an airplane more than 100 years old made an emergency landing at a Kentucky National Guard training site in Western Kentucky Monday.

Sarah Taylor Sulick, a spokeswoman for the National Transportation Safety Board, said preliminary information indicated the plane was an experimental replica of a Curtiss Jenny.

The Curtiss JN-4D was nicknamed the Jenny. It appeared in 1917 and was used as a trainer in World War I, according to the National Air and Space Museum.

The Federal Aviation Administration identified the plane as a home-built Curtiss JN-4D manufactured in 2013.

The plane that made a “controlled crash” Monday had been displayed at an air show in Indiana and was headed to Bowling Green after refueling at an airport in Hopkins County when the crash occurred, according to a release.

The plane lost power at an altitude of 1,500 feet and the pilot conducted the crash into a field at the Wendell H. Ford Regional Training Center in Muhlenberg County, according to the National Guard.

There were two pilots on board. They both walked away, but one later went to a hospital to be checked out.

The plane sustained heavy damage, the release said.

The crash happened about 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time Monday.

Sulick said investigators from the FAA were at the scene of the crash Tuesday, and that the NTSB will work with them.
