Deadly crash reported on I-75 in Central Kentucky. Avoid the area, police advise.
A crash on I-75 in Madison County caused one death Thursday morning, according to the Richmond Police Department.
According to a Facebook post from the Richmond Police Department, the crash occurred near mile marker 90. Officials temporarily closed the southbound lanes of the interstate Thursday morning. By 2:20 p.m., the road was cleared and all lanes were opened, the department said.
Billy Jolly, 46, died in the crash from blunt force trauma, said Madison County Coroner Jimmy Cornelison. Jolly, of Fleming County, was driving a tractor-trailer truck involved in the accident. The crash appeared to involve two tractor-trailers.
The crash happened around 7 a.m., Richmond Police Chief Rodney Richardson told the Herald-Leader. Collision reconstruction investigators were on scene Thursday.
In the morning, traffic was at a standstill in the southbound lanes near the crash. By the afternoon, one of the southbound lanes was opened but traffic was still backed up into Fayette County. Northbound traffic was also impacted as police and emergency medical services used that side of the highway.
Traffic was being diverted off the interstate at exit 95 for a detour that went around Richmond and rejoined the highway south of the city, Richardson said.
“Please avoid this area and be patient while first responders work to administer aid and clear the roadway,” the Richmond Police Department said in a Facebook post.
