Updated: 5-year-old accidentally shot and killed in southeastern Kentucky, state police say

A 5-year-old child was shot and killed by his 7-year-old brother in Jackson County Monday afternoon, according to Kentucky State Police.

The shooting happened before 5:30 p.m. at a home on Coal Road in the Big Hill community, near the Madison County line, according to KSP.

Life-saving measures were attempted on the 5-year-old, but Lonnie Hacker, deputy county corner, said he pronounced the boy dead at the scene.

State police officers were called to the scene by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

KSP said the shooting was accidental. An investigation is being conducted by Detective David Hobbs, who was assisted at the scene by several Jackson County emergency response agencies.

Authorities did not provide information on how the boy got access to the gun.
