Four thoroughbreds were killed Monday morning after a horse trailer caught fire on the Bluegrass Parkway, according to the Bardstown Fire Department.

The fire happened at mile-marker 29 on the Bluegrass Parkway, according to the fire department. Arriving firefighters found a horse trailer on fire and shut down the road to put out the blaze.

The trailer was carrying eight horses, four of which were rescued by the employees driving the trailer, the fire department said. The other four thoroughbreds died in the fire.

The horses which died were estimated to be valued at $750,000, according to the fire department. The destroyed trailer was valued at approximately $250,000.

The fire was being investigated by Nelson County Fire and Rescue.
