Distributor issues recall of frozen fruit sold in Kentucky. Check for these lot codes

If you enjoy smoothies or topping your breakfast cereal with frozen fruit, you might want to check your freezer and ensure none of your products have been recalled.

Sunrise Growers, a subsidiary of the multinational food company SunOpta, recently issued a voluntary recall of several frozen fruit products linked to possible listeria-contaminated pineapple.

According to the recall notice, as of June 21 there have been no illnesses associated with the voluntary recall.

Here’s which brand names, products and lot numbers you should look for on the packaging, plus what to know about this potentially dangerous bacteria.

What is listeria?

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause the infection listeriosis. People infected with the bacteria usually get it from contaminated food they’ve eaten.

For most people, it’s rare to get sick with a listeria infection, but for certain at-risk groups — those who are pregnant, newborns, older adults and people with weakened immune systems — it can sometimes lead to severe illness.

People with invasive listeriosis usually report symptoms one to four days weeks after eating contaminated, so it might be difficult to pinpoint the source of the infection. Still, other people have reported the onset of symptoms as late as 70 days after exposure, per the CDC.

If you ate food possibly contaminated with listeria and did not feel sick, most experts say tests and treatment are not necessary. However, if you do develop a fever or other symptoms, such as fatigue and muscle aches, you should seek medical and speak with a doctor, according to the CDC.
