Kentucky man and 12-year-old girl killed when tree fell on their moving vehicle

A man and a 12-year-old girl died when a tree fell on their truck in Western Kentucky Thursday afternoon.

Kentucky State Police said Christopher Fulkerson, 49, of Morgantown, was driving south on Brooklyn Chapel Road in Butler County when a tree alongside the road fell on the cab of his 2020 Chevrolet Silverado, according to a news release.

Fulkerson and his 12-year-old stepdaughter, Evelyn “Evie” Johnson, were pronounced dead at the scene, said Butler County Coroner Gerald “Marty” Jones.

State police said the Butler County sheriff’s office contacted them about the accident just before 2:30 p.m.

Jones said he believes storms were a contributing factor that caused the tree to fall.

Evie had just completed sixth grade at Butler County Middle School and was an honor roll student, cheerleader, athlete and “a social butterfly who loved animals and all her friends and family,” according to an obituary.

Butler County Schools said in a Facebook post that she “was a model student who excelled in everything she took part of.”

“Her attitude, personality and smile were contagious to those around her,” the post stated. “As our Butler County Schools Family grieves, we offer our sincere condolences, thoughts, and prayers for Evie’s friends and family.”

An obituary said Fulkerson enjoyed “enjoyed farming, wood working, traveling and helping those in need.”

Funeral services for both are scheduled for 3 p.m. Monday at Jones Funeral Chapel in Morgantown.
