A 12-year-old boy in Laurel County died Tuesday after suffering a gunshot wound, according to the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident happened shortly before 1 p.m. at a home just a few miles south of London. The sheriff’s office said a weapon was discharged inside a bedroom of the home, hitting the boy in the stomach.

The boy was transported to a hospital but died shortly after arriving, according to the sheriff’s office. Officials haven’t identified the victim publicly.

The victim will undergo an autopsy Wednesday, the sheriff’s office said. It’s undetermined whether anyone will face charges related to the incident, said Gilbert Acciardo with the sheriff’s office. An investigation was ongoing Wednesday.
