Lexington’s University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital was recently ranked the best hospital in the Bluegrass State by the U.S. News & World Report as part if its 2023 Best Hospitals report.

In addition to its top Kentucky ranking, the health care facility was named one of the best in the nation for three adult specialties, as well as three children’s specialties. The Best Hospitals ranking compared 4,515 health care facilities.

U.S. News & World Report ranks 15 specialty categories, 12 of which “rely largely on objective data.” The top 50 hospitals in each specialty are evaluated on metrics such as survival rates for “particularly challenging patients,” patient experience and more. More information about the ranking’s methodology is available online.

U.S. News & World Report ranked UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital 44th in the U.S. for cancer care, 49th for ear, nose and throat and 40th for obstetrics and gynecology. It also named the facility “high performing” in gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery.

Along with its adult specialty rankings, UK Albert B. Chandler placed seventh in the nation for pediatric cardiology and heart surgery, 42nd for pediatric orthopedics and another 42nd place for pediatric urology.

“The recognition as Kentucky’s best hospital by U.S. News and World Report affirms the tireless efforts of thousands of people at UK HealthCare who come together each day with one goal in mind – to advance the health of our state by extending the care that only we provide for Kentucky,” Eric Monday, acting co-executive vice president for health affairs at UK, said in an Aug. 1 press release. “We are proud of this ranking – a reflection of continued and sustained excellence over many years – but we are not satisfied. We have more to do to meet the health needs of our state and we are committed to that work.”

Here’s what to know about how other Central Kentucky hospitals performed in the ranking.
