Police investigating after human skull found in a wooded area of Eastern Kentucky

An investigation is underway after a human skull was found in Morehead Sunday, according to the Rowan County Coroner’s Office and the Morehead Police Department.

The remains were found around 4 p.m. by someone in a remote wooded area, the coroner’s office said. Authorities responded and confirmed they were skeletal remains.

Cadaver dogs also led investigators to personal items near the scene, according to Morehead police.

The remains were sent to the state Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort for further evaluation, the coroner’s office said.

Officials searched the scene Sunday but suspended it due to darkness, according to the coroner’s office. The search is expected to resume Monday.

The investigation is being conducted by Morehead police and the Rowan County Coroner’s Office.
