‘Every shelter is full.’ Kentucky dog rescue organization has big need for foster families
A Kentucky dog rescue organization is at maximum capacity and looking for foster families.
Bluegrass Bully Rescue, a non-profit organization, said it’s had dogs at its facilities for years and is begging for foster families. A batch of puppies is expected to begin crate training soon, which requires the organization to move at least six puppies.
“As much as we love them, keeping them long term takes up foster space we could use to help other dogs in need,” Bluegrass Bully Rescue said in a Facebook post. “If you are looking to adopt please consider one of the dogs that have been with us for a while.”
Tina Wright, a co-founder of Bluegrass Bully Rescue, said there are more dogs in need of care than there are people willing to help, which had led to Bluegrass Bully Rescue’s intake hold.
“It’s so bad right now,” Wright said. “Every rescue is full. Every shelter is full. People aren’t fostering and options are low.”
The organization is hosting events to introduce more families to dog fostering, Wright said. On Saturday, the organization will be at Legacy Grove Park in Winchester from 9 a.m. to noon for a “Howl-o-ween Festival,” which will feature parades and a costume contest.
Wright said a lot of puppies will be at the festival.
“When they get their eyes on the dogs, it kind of pulls more of their heart strings and they want to help,” Wright said.
Wright said the organization is open to bringing its dogs to community festivals, schools, workplaces and other locations to showcase the dogs while also putting a smile on people’s faces.
“The more we can get out in the community, the better, and people really love being able to love on the dogs, even if they aren’t ready to adopt or foster,” Wright said.
Bluegrass Bully Rescue said people interested in fostering dogs can apply at this link. Foster families don’t have to cover medical expenses, are given necessary supplies, and have the first option to adopt the fostered dog when they’re available for adoption.
Bluegrass Bully Rescue was founded in July 2019 and has the goal of increasing the amount of foster families to save as many dogs as possible.
“We would like to grow to the point that we can establish a physical facility to allow additional dog intake while waiting for a foster to open up,” the organization said on its website.
