Kentucky woman buys first scratch-off ticket — now she’ll split big win with daughter

Beginner’s luck scored one Frankfort woman a $75,000 Kentucky Lottery prize recently.

Rebecca Napier told lottery officials she needed to send a package to her daughter, according to a Monday press release, but opted to stop and get a soft drink first. That’s when she randomly decided to purchase a Cash Eruption scratch-off ticket.

“I never even drink Coke,” Napier told Kentucky Lottery officials. “But I was just craving it. That’s when I saw the ticket, and it just stood out.”

Napier was on the phone with her daughter when she scratched off the ticket, telling her if she won, they could split the winnings. When Napier saw she had won the $75,000 prize, her daughter didn’t believe her.

“She kept saying ‘Stop, mom, that’s mean,’” Napier said. “I told her, ‘You’re going to pay your car off.’”

The odds of winning any prize from Cash Eruption are 1 in 3.63, according to Kentucky Lottery’s website. The prizes span from $5 to the top $75,000 prize, but most winnings range between $5 and $10.

Napier bought the ticket at Frankfort’s Marathon Food Mart on East Main Street, which will win $750 for selling the ticket.

“I’ve never played, but something about that ticket just stood out,” Napier said.
