An 8-month-old child died in house fire Monday in Southern Kentucky, according to Kentucky State Police.

Police said Ashton Wright, 25, was asleep at her home in Tompkinsville when she woke up to find the house full of smoke.

Wright and a neighbor were able to get one of her children out of the house, but could not reach her infant daughter, according to a release.

Firefighters found the child dead inside. The surviving 2-year-old child had severe burns, according to a news release.

Police did not release the names of the children.

An electric space heater is believed to have started the fire, police said.
