A 63-year-old man was shot and killed inside a residence in Laurel County Monday.

The man shot and killed by police late Monday night pointed a gun at officers before he was shot, according to the London Police Department.

The shooting happened at a home on Vanzant Road in Laurel County, according to Kentucky State Police. London police officers were executing a search warrant and shot the man during the encounter.

London police said the investigation began in London city limits before the search warrant execution on Vanzant Road. While at the home the victim, “produced a firearm and pointed it at officers.”

Police did not say what they were investigating.

“The officer then responded with force, which resulted in the death of the occupant,” London police said in a statement.

The victim was identified as 63-year-old Douglas Harless, of Lily, according to WKYT. KSP said he was pronounced dead on the scene by the Laurel County Coroner’s Office.

No other injuries were reported. KSP is investigating the incident, as is typical with shootings involving law enforcement officers.

The officer who shot Harless has been placed on administrative leave, according to London police.
