Canned tuna at Kentucky Trader Joe’s stores recalled due to possible contamination
Canned tuna products sold at Kentucky Trader Joe’s grocery stores have been recalled due to possible contamination, according to Tri-Union Seafoods.
The product is sold under Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B and Trader Joe’s brand names, but can be found only under the Trader Joe’s brand name in Kentucky. Tri-Union Seafoods said the “easy open” pull tab can lid on limited products encountered a manufacturing defect, and it may cause contamination of the tuna.
The defective seal may allow the tuna to be contaminated with a type of bacteria called clostridium botulinum, according to Tri-Union Seafoods. The World Health Organization said the foodborne illness is relatively rare but potential fatal.
The toxins can also block nerve functions and lead to respiratory and muscular paralysis, according to WHO. No illnesses from the tuna have been reported as of last Friday.
“Consumers are warned not to use the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled. Consumers feeling unwell should seek immediate medical attention,” Tri-Union Seafoods said in a press release.
Tri-Union Seafoods said people with the recalled product are encouraged to return it to the retailer for a full refund, throw it away or contact Tri-Union Seafoods directly at support@thaiunionhelp.zendesk.com or 833-374-0171 for a retrieval kit and a coupon for a replacement product.
