KY native George Clooney to Trump: ‘I hope you do well, because our country needs it’
Kentucky native George Clooney delivered a message to President Donald Trump while appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Tuesday.
Clooney was on the show promoting his upcoming Broadway play, “Good Night, and Good Luck.” Clooney and Colbert began discussing politics, and Clooney, a lifelong Democrat, wished Trump a successful term.
“I hope you do well, because our country needs it,” Clooney said. “We’ll meet you in 3 1/2 years and see where we go next.”
Clooney, 63, talked with Colbert about growing up a Democrat in Kentucky — he was born in Lexington and attended high school in Augusta, on the Ohio River in Bracken County — and said he first voted in the 1980 presidential election, when he cast a ballot for Jimmy Carter.
Clooney then mentioned he’s supported several Democratic candidates who wound up losing elections, including this past fall, when former Vice President Kamala Harris lost to Trump.
“What am I supposed to do? Storm the [expletive] Capitol?” Clooney joked. “It didn’t work out, that’s what happens. It’s part of democracy.”
Clooney used his son’s passion for chess as an example of how to lose respectfully.
“He plays a lot of older kids, and he’s not winning all the time, as you can imagine,” Clooney said. “He gets upset, and I say, ‘Listen, you shake the guy’s hand and you say good game, I’ll get you next time.’”
