A 76-year-old man died Monday night after falling over a cliff and drowning in Herrington Lake, according to the Mercer County Coroner’s Office.

The man was identified as John Gregory Wood, according to the coroner’s office. Wood had been drinking and lost his balance over a cliff, hit his head and drowned in the lake.

Wood’s death is being investigated as an accident, according to the coroner’s office. The Mercer County Sheriff’s Office is also assisting with the investigation.

Herrington Lake is located in Boyle, Garrard and Mercer counties and was artificially created by the damming of the Dix River in 1925. The lake is used recreationally and is also a source of hydroelectric power.
