Several people taken to hospital after fire breaks out at Kentucky nursing home

Several people were taken to a hospital Tuesday morning after a fire broke in a Kentucky nursing home, according to the Bardstown Fire Department.

The fire happened around 6:30 a.m. at Landmark Nursing Home in Bardstown. Firefighters found fire venting out a window when they arrived, and they quickly extinguished the fire before it spread to the attic space.

No severe injuries or deaths were reported.

Nursing home staff and Bardstown police officers evacuated residents from the building while additional firefighters made sure all patients were out. The fire department said 15 residents and three staff members were taken to a hospital due to smoke inhalation.

Additionally, two Bardstown police officers suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to a hospital. The police department said the officers are doing fine and have been released.

About 38 other residents were transported to Landmark’s sister facility in Louisville by Nelson County School buses, according to the fire department.

The fire department said the fire was caused by an electrical failure in the HVAC unit.
