A Kentucky middle school teacher was hit by a car while conducting a science lesson outside, school officials said.

In a letter sent to families, Barret Traditional Middle School Principal Amy Strite said the teacher was struck during first period Tuesday, March 4, WHAS reported.

The class was participating in a hands-on lesson when a ball rolled into the road, WLKY reported, citing the letter from Strite.

While retrieving the ball from a crosswalk outside the Louisville school, a driver struck the teacher, the outlet reported.

The driver called 911 and stayed at the scene, according to WHAS.

The teacher was alert and conscious as she was being taken to the hospital for treatment, the Courier Journal reported.

Strite said some students saw the incident, and school counselors were providing support to anyone who needed it, the outlet reported.

“The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority, and we are taking steps to support everyone affected by this event,” Strite said, according to WDRB.
