Crash involving Amish buggy in Kentucky sends 5, including 3 juveniles, to hospital

A collision involving an Amish buggy sent four people, including three juveniles, to a hospital Thursday, according to Kentucky State Police.

The crash happened near the 14000 block of South KY 259 in Breckinridge County. KSP said a Ford Taurus rear-ended the horse-drawn buggy, which was occupied by 33-year-old Elise Girod and three juveniles.

All of the buggy’s occupants were flown to University of Louisville Hospital, according to KSP. Girod and one of the juveniles are still hospitalized with life-threatening injuries while the other two juveniles have been released.

The driver of the Taurus suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to KSP. The horse pulling the buggy was not injured.

The collision remains under investigation.

According to state law, you can legally pass a horse and buggy along Kentucky’s roads. Some tips for passing horse-drawn buggies include laying off the horn, dimming the headlights and staying alert.
