A body was found inside a submerged vehicle in a Kentucky pond late Sunday, according to the Northeast Nelson Fire Protection District.

Around 11:30 p.m., a 911 caller reported seeing tail lights in a pond on the 300 block of Chaplin Road. The fire district said arriving firefighters found a partially submerged vehicle about 65 feet from the bank of the pond.

Firefighters used a boat to get to the vehicle, but they were unable to tell if anyone was inside. The Taylorsville-Spencer County Fire District was then contacted, and their dive team found a victim inside the vehicle.

The victim was declared dead on scene, according to the Nelson fire district. Nelson County Coroner Danielle Chladek identified him as 72-year-old Gregory Phipps, of Bardstown.

There was heavy rain and gusty winds at the time of the crash, according to Nelson County Emergency Management.

Ellis Towing & Recovery was called to the scene to recover the vehicle. Officials were at the scene for about three hours, according to the Nelson fire district.
