1 person dead, 11 more injured after serious collision on Highway 52 in Garrard County

One person died and 11 more were injured in a crash Tuesday morning in Garrard County, emergency officials said.

The crash happened just before 7:30 a.m. on Highway 52 East (Richmond Road), near Old Railroad Road, said Garrard County EMS and Garrard County EMA/CSEPP. The Garrard County Sheriff’s Office said a Toyota Corolla was traveling east and collided head-on with a Ford Sprinter van in the westbound lane.

The driver of the Corolla, 23-year-old Scott Cary, of Lancaster, died at Baptist Health Hospital in Richmond, according to the sheriff’s office. There were 11 passengers in the van, all of whom were transported to area hospitals for treatment.

The extent of the injuries to the van’s passengers is unknown.

The road was closed while officials investigated the scene, and traffic was being diverted through Loop 3.

Garrard County EMS said in a statement that officials are praying for the victims.

“Incidents like this remind us of the strength and coordination of our surrounding community,” Garrard County EMS said in a Facebook post. “We are grateful for the seamless collaboration and quick response from all involved.”

Multiple out-of-county agencies responded to the scene, including Lincoln County Emergency Medical Service Inc., Madison County EMS and Air Evac Lifeteam 56 in Danville.
