A Kentucky State Police trooper shot and killed a man early Monday.

The shooting happened in front of a home on Kentucky Route 36. KSP troopers were initially dispatched to the home around 11 p.m. Sunday because Ramon Morales, 50, of Cynthiana, was refusing to leave.

Morales fled in a van before troopers arrived, but he crashed the van into another car on KY-36 and ran from the scene, KSP said.

A trooper later found Morales on the shoulder of the roadway in front of the home where troopers were initially called.

The trooper had an “interaction” with Morales and shot him. No other information about the interaction was available Tuesday morning.

Morales was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The trooper was not injured.

KSP is investigating the shooting, which is routine when law enforcement officers are involved in shootings.

“KSP is committed to being transparent while ensuring the integrity of the investigation,” the agency said in a news release. “To protect the integrity of an ongoing investigation, it is KSP’s standard operating procedure not to release specific details until vital witnesses have been interviewed and pertinent facts have been gathered.“
