A restaurant that serves one of the best biscuits in the South is located in the Bluegrass State.

Southern Living released an article in June 22 highlighting the 12 best places in the South for biscuits, selected by chefs, and one Louisville bakery made the list.

“The fluffy wonders known as Southern-style biscuits are a must-have on any picnic table in this region of the country,” the article reads.

Butchertown Grocery Bakery, at 743 E. Main St. in Louisville, was included in the article, with one chef highlighting the sausage biscuit sandwich.

“Every time I am in Louisville, I make it a point to swing by,” Brian Laundry, the owner of QED Hospitality, said in the article.

Chef and owner Amanda Johnson found out about the Southern Living feature by stumbling across the article.

“That was kind of cool, the fact that another chef was like, ‘They make really good biscuits,’” Johnson said.

When asked what she believes stands out about Butchertown’s biscuits, Johnson said the ingredients, especially the butter.

“We use the best quality ingredients. I use the best butter,” Johnson said. “I like to butter the biscuit, and then butter it again, and then butter it again.”

The bakery’s Yelp reviews are full of five-star reviews.

“I’m so disappointed. In myself. For not ordering the entire menu. What we had was FANTASTIC,” one Yelp review from June reads.

“Love this neighborhood bakery, it’s a super warm and cozy spot!,” another from February reads.

In addition to its biscuits, the bakery’s menu also includes cookies (chocolate chunk, bourbon barrel sugar and lemon berry, just to name a few), croissants, coffee and sandwiches, among other bakery favorites.

Johnson said she tries to make the feel of the bakery as cozy as possible.

“It’s just a cute little neighborhood spot that has gotten a lot more traction from out-of-towners,” she said.

Kentucky is not new to Southern Living recognition. In March, Lexington was named as one of the publication’s top 10 Southern cities, which followed a December article that named Lexington as a top travel spot.

Earlier this summer, Southern Living highlighted the Mary Todd Lincoln house in Lexington as a top place to visit. These are just three of many nods the publication has given Kentucky over the years.
