A 13-year-old boy was injured in a tubing accident Saturday on Herrington Lake, according to a spokesperson for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The incident happened about 8 p.m. Saturday in the southern section of Herrington Lake near Paradise Camp Marina.
The boy was riding on a tube being towed by a boat and fell off. The driver of the boat turned around to retrieve the boy but ran him over, according to the spokesperson, Game Warden James Brace.
The boy was taken to a hospital with broken bones and lacerations, Brace said.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Brace provided several tips on how to safely participate in towed sports, such as tubing and water-skiing, from BoatUS Foundation, a group that promotes safe, clean and responsible boating. It’s the responsibility of the captain to ensure the safety of the participant and establish safety plans before beginning the activity.
Other tips include wearing a life jacket, having an observer watch the participant at all times, using a tow-rope that is at least 75 feet long, avoiding tow sports when it’s dark, not using drugs or alcohol and coming up with hand signals and a re-boarding plan prior to beginning the activity.
