A firefighter injured in a serious tanker truck crash has died, the Raywick Volunteer Fire Department announced Tuesday.
Lt. Brian Hatt, 51, died just before 4 p.m. Monday at University of Louisville Hospital. The crash happened three days earlier on KY 527, Saint Francis Raywick Road, in Marion County.
Hatt had worked with the fire department for 12 years and also served in the U.S. Army, according to Supporting Heroes, a group that supports line-of-duty deaths of first responders in Kentucky, Indiana and Missouri. He had three children and two grandchildren.
The fire department said Hatt served with courage and compassion.
“Lieutenant Hatt was more than a firefighter — he was family to all of us at the Raywick Fire Department,” Herman Riggs, Chief of the Raywick Fire Department, said in a Facebook post. “His legacy of service and sacrifice will live on in the department and in the hearts of the community he so selflessly served.”
Kentucky State Police said Hatt was driving the truck with its emergency equipment activated when it dropped off the right shoulder, and the edge of the road collapsed. Hatt lost control of the truck, which crossed to the left side of the road and flipped after hitting an embankment.
Hatt was thrown from the vehicle, while another firefighter, Leonard Winkler, 58, of Raywick, was trapped inside. Winkler was taken by helicopter to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital with serious injuries. His condition was not available Tuesday morning.
