Be alert, drivers: Kentucky police are increasing enforcement over Labor Day
Drivers, be on the lookout.
Kentucky State Police will participate in a nationwide law enforcement effort to heighten road safety over the Labor Day weekend.
Multiple state police posts issued news releases saying they planned to participate in Operation C.A.R.E., or Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort, beginning Friday and continuing through Monday.
State police said they hope to reduce the number of collisions and save lives by increasing patrols “on highways and interstates, with special attention given to impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving and failure to wear seatbelts.”
Motorists were reminded to plan for a ride before drinking, wear their seatbelts, avoid using phones while driving and move over for emergency vehicles.
The Lexington Police Department also issued a traffic advisory ahead of Labor Day weekend, which includes the University of Kentucky’s first home football game of the season.
“With more people out on the roads, allow extra time to reach your destination,” Lexington police said in a news release on Friday afternoon. “Be alert while driving and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. Drivers should expect heavier vehicle and pedestrian traffic.”
The police department said parking will be prohibited on the following streets between 6 a.m. Saturday and 6 a.m. Sunday: Crescent Avenue, State Street, University Avenue, Elizabeth Street from Waller Avenue to Conn Terrace and from Waller Avenue to Floral Park, Forest Park Road and Floral Park.
“We want everyone to have a safe Labor Day Weekend,” said Lt. Jeremiah Davis of the Lexington Police Department Traffic Section. “There are several events in Lexington this weekend, and we are asking drivers to allow extra time to make it to their destination and use caution while driving.”
