The incident happened just before 6 p.m. at a home on East Augusta-Chatham Road in Bracken County. State police said a deputy with the Bracken County Sheriff’s Office was at the home conducting a welfare check on Justin Gillespie, 34.
The deputy was talking to Gillespie on the front porch, when Gillespie ran inside the house. State police said the deputy went to the back door, and when Gillespie exited, and an altercation occurred.
During the altercation, the deputy shot Gillespie, according to state police. Bracken County EMS attempted life-saving measures on Gillespie, but he was pronounced dead at the home.
