Man killed in KY hunting accident after boy mistook him for a deer

A man was shot and killed Saturday in Lincoln County after a boy mistook him for a deer, according to the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Law Enforcement Division.

Danny Wilson, 67, was shot in the leg and died at a hospital, according to Fish and Wildlife. The Lincoln County Coroner’s Office said Wilson was at a family member’s farm scouting the area for wildlife and was not wearing orange hunting clothing.

Authorities have not released the boy’s age, but TV station WKYT described him as a teenager. He was hunting with his father and fired at what he thought was a deer, said the coroner’s office.

The incident happened in the area of Eubank and Waynesburg, about 65 miles south of downtown Lexington, WKYT reported. After firing the shot, the boy and the father called 911 when they found Wilson instead of a deer, according to the coroner’s office.

The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident.
