After ‘fighting his hardest,’ UPS plane crash victim dies at hospital
The sister of one of the victims of Tuesday’s UPS cargo plane crash in Louisville confirmed in a Thursday Facebook post he had died from his injuries.
Regarding her brother Matt Sweets, Michelle Sweets wrote, “It is with the heaviest heart, I regret to inform all of you that he passed away this afternoon after fighting his hardest in the ICU. “
“The outpour of love and concern from our community has been truly touching. We’ll share information about arrangements in the next day or two. For now, please keep his girlfriend Brooke and his two young children in your prayers as well as the rest of us,” Michelle Sweets wrote.
Her brother Matt is the 13th confirmed death as a result of the plane crash that occurred around 5:20 p.m. Tuesday evening. Officials have not released the names of all of those who died, but in a statement UPS identified the three crew members killed.
According to information provided in a GoFundMe, Matt Sweets suffered burns to 95% of his body after he was caught in the explosive aftermath of the crash. He is the father of two young children.
The cause of Tuesday’s crash is still under investigation, but in a Wednesday news briefing, a National Transportation Safety Board member said it appears an engine detached from the MD-11 aircraft shortly after takeoff.
