Red River Gorge hiker gets bitten by copperhead, Kentucky officials say

A person was bitten by a copperhead snake while hiking in the Red River Gorge Area on Saturday, according to a local search and rescue team.

The incident was reported to Powell County officials around 1 a.m. after a caller shared that a hiker had been bitten by a copperhead snake. The Powell County Search & Rescue team said the person had been hiking into a campsite on Auxier Ridge Trail when they were bitten on their right ankle.

Officials found the hiker about a half-mile in on Double Arch Trail. The search & rescue team said the hiker was extricated from the trail and sent to a hospital for treatment.

“As a reminder, if you experience a snakebite in the wilderness, remain calm, move a safe distance away from the snake, dial 911 and stay on the line until emergency personnel reach you,” the search & rescue team said in a Facebook post.

The hiker’s condition wasn’t clear Tuesday.
