Two people died after a crash involving an emergency vehicle on Interstate 75 in Scott County on Saturday afternoon.

The Scott County Coroner’s Office confirmed the fatalities in a social media post but did not immediately identify the victims, saying family had not been notified.

Preliminary reports indicate that emergency vehicles were stopped at the scene of a prior single-vehicle accident when another vehicle hit one of the emergency vehicles, the Scott County Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post.

Several people in the vehicle had life-threatening injuries, the sheriff’s office said. No first responders were hurt.

The crash happened in the southbound lanes at mile marker 141. The coroner said the interstate was shut down at the 144 exit, and traffic was being diverted onto U.S. 25.

The sheriff’s office said multiple lanes were closed, and traffic would be affected for several hours.

As of 5:30 p.m., the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s traffic website said southbound I-75 was reduced to one lane, and motorists should expect delays.

The coroner said Kentucky State Police are also investigating.
