A hiker was able to walk out of Natural Bridge State Resort Park after being struck by lightning Saturday afternoon.

A 911 caller told Powell County dispatchers the hiker had been struck by lightning, then fallen and hit their head.

Powell County Search and Rescue and Powell County Emergency Medical Services were called to the park at about 1:50 p.m., and when they arrived, they learned the person who reportedly had been hit by lightning and the 911 caller were hiking out together, the search and rescue team said in a social media post.

“The 911 caller and the subject were on Low Gap Trail and hiking slowly down to the parking lot at the skylift,” the post stated. “The subject was able to walk out under their own power, evaluated by EMS, and transported to a local area hospital for further treatment and evaluation.”

Natural Bridge State Resort Park personnel also provided assistance, and crews had left the scene by 3:30 p.m., according to the search and rescue team.
