2 Ky. Guard units get Iraq orders

Two Kentucky Army National Guard units have received order to prepare for duty in Iraq.

The 299th Chemical Company based in Maysville and the 301st Chemical Company based in Morehead are scheduled to report to their armories on May 9, 2009. Then they will leave for several weeks of training at Camp Shelby, Miss.

Although both units are trained for chemical decontamination, their primary mission will be base security.

There are 66 soldiers in the 299th and 86 soldiers in the 301st. Many of those soldiers previously deployed in 2005-06, but this will be the first time either unit will deploy to Iraq, Guard spokesman David Altom said.

Since Sept. 11, 2001, more than 10,000 Kentucky National Guard soldiers and airmen have been deployed. The Kentucky National Guard currently has more than 700 troops in Afghanistan, Iraq and around the globe.
