Inmates will face charges for Northpoint riot

Commonwealth's Attorney Richie Bottoms estimated Friday that more than 100 inmates at Northpoint Training Center will be criminally charged for their role in an August 21 riot.

The riot at the medium security prison near Danville left buildings destroyed by fire and inmates and corrections officers with minor injuries.

Bottoms, the commonwealth's attorney for Boyle and Mercer counties, said he didn't expect the cases to be heard by a grand jury for a few months.

On Thursday, Department of Corrections Commissioner LaDonna Thompson told state lawmakers in Frankfort that some inmates will face criminal charges and others will be disciplined within the prison system.

In total, at least 175 inmates will face some form of disciplinary action for their role, according to state Department of Corrections spokesperson Lisa Lamb. All inmates under investigation are currently housed in segregation units throughout the state prison system.

Kentucky State Police officials and internal corrections investigators are reviewing the incident.

A report on the causes is due in early November.
