Flood watch: Heavy rainfall Tuesday could lead to flooded areas across Kentucky
A large storm carrying heavy rain will linger in Kentucky most of the day Tuesday, which could lead to flooding in certain areas.
One to three inches of rain were expected to fall Tuesday, which may cause flooding in rivers, streams and other flood-prone areas, according to the National Weather Service. The weather service has placed the majority of Kentucky’s 120 counties under a flood watch or warning as a result.
Gov. Andy Beshear on Monday warned residents to “please be alert and stay safe.”
Those living in flood prone areas should prepare to take action in case water levels do rise, according to the weather service. Information about floods and flood safety tips can be found on the weather service’s website.
The greatest threat for severe storms is in western or south-Central Kentucky, according to the weather service. Heavy rainfall and damaging winds are the primary hazards, but there is a low chance for an isolated tornado as well.
Tuesday’s rainstorm could be followed by more rain, possibly a wintry mix, in the later days of the week, according to the weather service. A wintry storm could make an appearance Wednesday night and Thursday night, although the weather service’s confidence level for such a storm was low.
One to two more inches of rain could fall Wednesday through Friday, which could increase the chances or severity of potential flooding, the weather service said.
