Lexington weather: Forecasters still expect snow, single-digit wind chills

Lexington’s latest winter storm of 2022 is set to make hit the area later Friday, bringing with it snow accumulations and potential traffic hazards.

The National Weather Service said the snow should start falling in Lexington after the evening commute between 9 and 11 p.m. Anyone driving on I-75 and portions of I-64 during that span should expect difficult travel conditions, according to the National Weather Service.

Gusty winds could also make traveling overnight difficult. The National Weather Service said winds between 25 and 30 miles per hour could cause some blowing snow early Saturday morning.

Three to five inches of snow accumulation are expected by the National Weather Service. Snow rates could produce 1 to 2 inches of snow per hour. Some areas of Eastern Kentucky may see 6 inches of snow or more.

Lexington and virtually all of Eastern Kentucky will be under a winter storm warning. The National Weather Service said the warning will begin at 10 p.m Friday and last through 10 a.m. Saturday.

The rest of the state is under a winter weather advisory.

Frigid temperatures will chill the entire commonwealth after the storm’s departure. The National Weather Service said wind chills could produce a temperature as low as six degrees Fahrenheit in Lexington Saturday, and it will be very cold on Sunday as well.

WKYT Chief Meteorologist Chris Bailey shares a forecast similar to the National Weather Service, calling for 3 to 6 to inches of snow for Lexington. He expects parts of Eastern Kentucky to see 4 to 8 inches of snow.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 7, which covers Fayette County, is prepared for the storm’s arrival. It said personnel have been readying equipment and trucks, and thinks the warmer temperatures preceding the storm will make it easier for crews to plow the roads.

Nonetheless, it still encourages drivers to plan accordingly if they have to travel Saturday morning.
