‘Important for everyone to be safe.’ How Lexington is handling high temperatures this week

The city of Lexington announced it has activated its heat plan for at least the next five days, which provides a number of services in an effort to ensure safety for people in extreme heat.

A cooling center has been opened at the Tates Creek Golf Course on Gainesway Drive. The room will be open from 7 a.m. to dusk. Lextran will provide free rides to the cooling center for Lexington residents.

Public pools will offer half-priced admission through Sunday.

“When our summer temperatures reach into the 90’s, and our heat index gets even higher, it is important for everyone to be safe outdoors,” said Mayor Linda Gorton. “I encourage everyone to stay hydrated, find shade if possible, and rest frequently if you’re working outdoors for extended periods.”

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures are expected reach the 90s every day through the weekend. The National Weather Service advises people to take precaution when working outside and to never leave people or pets in parked vehicles.

All of western Kentucky is under a heat advisory, according to the National Weather Service.
