Will Lexington be warmer for New Year’s weekend? Check out the latest weather forecasts

As Central Kentucky residents manage frozen and broken water pipes, along with other harmful results from the recent extreme winter weather, some may be wondering if the New Year’s holiday will bring milder conditions.

The National Weather Service Louisville office predicts warmer, rainy weather in Lexington for the holiday weekend.

Here are the latest New Year’s Eve and Jan. 1 forecasts for the area from the NWS and Accuweather, along with a Farmers’ Almanac regional prediction.

New Year’s weather in Lexington

The NWS expects Lexington residents will see showers New Year’s Eve, with a 70% chance of precipitation Saturday night as of Dec. 27.

Here’s what NWS forecasts for Lexington New Year’s weekend:

  • Saturday: Showers, 80% chance of precipitation. High near 58 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • Saturday night: Showers likely, mostly before 2 a.m. Mostly cloudy with a low near 47 degrees; chance of precipitation is 70%.

Accuweather forecasts a 96% chance of precipitation in Lexington Saturday, with breezes in the afternoon and temperatures ranging from 49 to 55 degrees. The site’s Sunday forecast includes a 71% chance of rain with temperatures from 47 to 57 degrees.

Farmers’ Almanac predictions

The Farmers’ Almanac has released New Year’s Eve weather predictions for U.S. and Canada localities. Kentucky is in the almanac’s “Zone 2,” along with Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin.

Zone 2 residents can expect “Variable cloudiness, few rain or snow showers as we ring in ’23,” the almanac says.

The almanac makes predictions based on a mysterious formula that considers factors such as planetary positioning, sunspot activity and tidal action of the moon.

“The only person who knows the exact formula is the Farmers’ Almanac weather prognosticator who goes by the pseudonym of Caleb Weatherbee,” the organization’s website says. “To protect this proprietary formula, the editors of the Farmers’ Almanac prefer to keep both Caleb’s true identity and the formula a closely guarded brand secret.”
