Lexington under flood watch in preparation for heavy rainfall in Friday forecast
There’s high potential for heavy rain in northern and Central Kentucky heading into the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
The NWS has issued a flood watch for Lexington and other surrounding areas that is in effect from Thursday evening to Saturday afternoon in preparation for the storm. The NWS said 2 to 3 inches of rain are expected for Northern Central Kentucky.
“The National Weather Service is highly confident about potential flash flooding and minor to moderate river flooding,” Gov. Andy Beshear said during a Thursday press conference.
The heaviest rain is expected to happen Friday evening into the overnight hours, the NWS said. The storms could also produce enhanced wind gusts and isolated tornadoes.
The NWS forecasts Lexington to get 1.5 to 2 inches of rain from the storm. It also puts Lexington in the marginal risk area of its severe weather outlook map.
“Knowing the situation early and taking all the necessary precautions can have a major positive impact,” Beshear said.
Beshear encouraged people to be aware of their risk of flooding by visiting floodsmart.gov. He also said people should have a plan to get to higher ground in case water levels do rise.
“Remember never to walk or drive through flooded roadways,” Beshear said.
