May showers might stretch into the coming months, as Kentucky residents could be in for a stormy summer this year, according to one prediction.

The increased rainfall isn’t expected to bring lower temperatures, though. The National Weather Service reports Kentucky has a 33% to 50% chance of above-normal temperatures from May to July.

The likelihood of a hotter-than-typical summer depends on the region of the commonwealth. The chance of above-normal precipitation is also 33% to 50%, the NWS reports.

Here’s what to know about the summer weather forecast for this year, a prediction from the Farmers’ Almanac and data from the NWS.

Farmers’ Almanac prediction for Kentucky

The Farmers’ Almanac warns of “sizzling temperatures” across the U.S. this summer, plus storms and high humidity in some areas.

The almanac’s Summer Forecast 2023 predicts Kentucky will have an “oppressive, showery, thundery” summer. The central U.S. will see above-average rainfall, the almanac expects, and Kentucky and surrounding states may see more thunderstorms than usual.

The almanac makes predictions based on a mysterious formula that considers factors such as planetary positioning, sunspot activity and tidal action of the moon.

“The only person who knows the exact formula is the Farmers’ Almanac weather prognosticator who goes by the pseudonym of Caleb Weatherbee,” the organization’s website says. “To protect this proprietary formula, the editors of the Farmers’ Almanac prefer to keep both Caleb’s true identity and the formula a closely guarded brand secret.”

The Farmers’ Almanac has provided extended forecasts since 1818, according to its website.
