Kentucky Power, which has about 163,000 customers in 20 Eastern Kentucky counties, said more than 12,000 customers lost power Tuesday when high winds moved through the region.
Crews were able to restore service to more than half during the day, but power remained out to about 5,700 customers Wednesday morning, according to the company. The outages were concentrated in Boyd, Carter, Greenup, Lawrence and Martin counties.
The storms caused significant damage, including more than 75 broken utility poles and more than 70 spots with spans of wire down, the company said in a release. Winds topped 90 miles per hour, according to Kentucky Power.
Crews from out of state will join the repair effort Wednesday, but the work to restore power to all customers will likely continue through the end of the week, the company said.
