Snowflakes in November? It could happen as cold front sweeps into Lexington area this week

Kentucky is expected to experience its first round of winter weather this week as colder temperatures, gusty winds and snowflakes are in the forecast this week, according to the National Weather Service.

The week is expected to begin with warmer temperatures, but by Wednesday a cold front from the Great Lakes region will push into Kentucky and drop the temperature. The NWS’ seven-day forecast for Lexington shows a projected high temperature of 56 degrees Fahrenheit Wednesday, 41 degrees Thursday and 43 degrees Friday.

Chances of rain and light snow are also possible Wednesday night through Friday morning, according to the NWS. Accumulation amounts are expected to be light, as warmer near-surface air temperatures will keep the snow from having a big impact, NWS forecasters said in the area forecast discussion.

Thursday evening projects to have the best chances for snow, according to the NWS. The temperature will drop into the low 30s or high 20s, creating the opportunity for a lingering snow shower to drop a dusting of snow. Grassy areas east of US 127 have the best chances of getting snow accumulation.

WKYT meteorologist Chris Bailey said central and eastern Kentucky have the best chances of seeing snow this week, with higher chances more toward the east. WKYT meteorologist Jim Caldwell also projects snow chances for the eastern portion of the state but accumulation projections are unknown at this point.

It’s also expected to be a windy week, as 30-40 mph wind gusts are possible after the cold front pushes in, according to the NWS.
