Fayette County Public Schools, like several districts across Kentucky, have canceled in-person classes Monday and will have a non-traditional instruction day instead.

The non-traditional instruction day means students will learn virtually or at home.

“Due to ongoing unsafe road conditions on many bus routes and in some neighborhoods and yet-to-be-cleared neighborhood sidewalks, Fayette County Public Schools will hold a Non-Traditional Instruction Day, also known as NTI Day, on Monday, January 13, 2025,” district spokesperson Dia Davidson-Smith said Sunday afternoon.

Fayette School Board Chair Tyler Murphy said in a Sunday Facebook post that families will receive specific communication from their schools, and the district is implementing a plan to provide technology support and flexibility to families and students who need them.

A letter to families from the school district said a recent survey found that as many as 81% of families have the technology at home needed to participate in an NTI Day.

“So that all students have a chance to participate, we have extended the timeline for NTI assignments and will ensure that no penalties are given for turning in work late,” the message said.

Monday night’s regularly scheduled planning work session of the Board of Education will proceed as scheduled, Murphy said.

Fayette’s students have not yet returned from winter break following a major storm that dropped more than a half-foot of snow and about an inch of ice over the past week.

The district had four traditional snow days last week.
