Just as the snow was almost gone and temperatures hit the 40s in Central Kentucky, another round of snow and cold is on the way.

Fayette County and surrounding counties could get 1 to 3 inches of snow Sunday, while less was expected in the western part of the commonwealth.

After that, arctic air will push into the region for the first half of the week, bringing wind chills below zero.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for 1 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday for Central Kentucky, saying people should plan for slippery road conditions.

“Light to moderate snow showers will develop early Sunday morning and continue through the afternoon hours,” the weather service said. “Expect low visibility while traveling due to snow showers and breezy winds of 15-25 mph.”

The highest snowfall rates will be between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m., the weather service said, with snow tapering off by 7 p.m. in Central Kentucky.

Parts of Eastern Kentucky could get 2 to 5 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service, and a winter storm warning was in effect through 3 a.m. Monday for Harlan, Floyd, Knott, Letcher, Martin and Pike counties.

Then, after a high temperature of 27 degrees Sunday, the weather service said Monday’s high will be about 15 degrees in Lexington, with wind chills as low as minus-8 degrees.

A cold weather advisory was issued for most of the state from 7 p.m. Sunday through 1 p.m. Monday.

Highs Tuesday and Wednesday are expected in the low 20s, while Lexington’s early-morning lows will be about 6 degrees Tuesday and around 0 Wednesday.

The latter half of the week should be warmer, with highs in the 30s, according to the NWS.

In anticipation of the fast-approaching snow, Lexington crews were out Saturday afternoon de-icing streets.

Priority roads will be treated overnight, and an additional crew is to come in at noon Sunday.

City officials said Saturday that the city’s snow removal plan with street and sidewalk rankings is available at lexingtonky.gov/snow.
