Central Kentucky may get another round of snow next week. Flooding is also possible

Winter weather fans rejoice — there is a potential for more snow next week.

Multiple waves of precipitation are expected to roll through the region next week, some of which may include snow. The National Weather Service said the best chances for wintry precipitation are Tuesday and Thursday, but the NWS’ confidence in predicting the type of precipitation is low.

The first system is expected to move through the region Monday night into Tuesday morning. The NWS said weather models show medium probabilities of snow accumulation greater than one inch over the area, specifically near the Western Kentucky and Bluegrass parkways.

The NWS’ seven-day forecast for Lexington puts precipitation chances at 90% for Tuesday, saying rain and snow are likely after 1 a.m. The high that day is projected to be 40 degrees.

The second round of precipitation is expected to move through Wednesday night into Thursday. The NWS said the second system is expected to feature heavier precipitation, but rain is more likely than snow.

The chance for precipitation Wednesday night is 80%, according to the Lexington seven-day forecast.

“However, additional chances for wintry precipitation would be possible as the precipitation is ending and cold air rushes in behind, though confidence in this is low,” the NWS said in an area forecast discussion message board.

NWS concerned about flooding chances next week

No matter the type of precipitation, there are concerns for flooding in the region next week, according to the NWS.

“The amount of precipitation causes some concern for area stream levels, especially considering ongoing minor flooding in some basins,” the NWS said in the area forecast discussion.

There is greater than a 70% chance of minor flooding along the Green River next week and between 25-50% chance of flooding along the Licking and Rolling Fork Rivers, according to the NWS.

There is a lesser chance of flooding on other Kentucky rivers, but NWS encouraged people to monitor the forecast for changes.
