Spring weather is on the way for Central Kentucky.

The projected high temperatures are expected to reach the 70s this week, according to the National Weather Service. The seven-day forecast for Lexington says the high Monday is 67 degrees while the highs for the rest of the week are between 72 and 78 degrees.

There is a 20-30% chance of rain Thursday, but conditions are otherwise expected to be sunny and dry, according to the NWS.

The average high temperature for March 10-14 in Lexington is in the lower 50s, according to NWS data. Record daily high temperatures during that time are between 77-81 degrees, records that go back at least 35 years ago.

Temperatures will remain warm this weekend, but rain will likely begin Friday night, said the NWS. Most areas will receive 1 to 2 inches of rain, but some could get as much as 4 inches.

Flooding isn’t expected to be a problem from the storm, as previously flooded areas have recovered well, and dry conditions this week will only lower flooding chances, the NWS said. However, areas that receive higher amounts of rain could experience minor flooding, particularly on the Green River basin.

”This would mostly be due to continued water release from upstream reservoirs,” the NWS said in the area forecast discussion.

It’s too early to predict if the storm will cause any hazards. The NWS said the biggest threat from the storm could be gusty winds.

“Won’t take other severe hazards off the table by any means, but right now I think the very dry airmass in place may help us mitigate our threat to a more isolated nature,” the NWS said in the area forecast discussion.
