Several Kentucky school districts canceled in-person classes Thursday as a major overnight storm left some roads impassable.

The storm brought heavy rain, wind and lightning across Kentucky, with tens of thousands of people left without power. At least two tornadoes touched down in the state, in Louisville and near Murray, and severe weather alerts continued through the day on Thursday.

Throughout Kentucky, near-constant rain is expected through the weekend, which could bring flooding.

Estill County School District officials said in a Facebook post that the district was canceling school “due to hazardous road conditions and fallen trees making several county roads impassable.”

In Harrison County, “Due to numerous roads blocked with trees and other storm debris, there will be no school,” officials posted on Facebook, along with a photo of storm damage.

In Lewis County, school officials said, “Due to localized flooding and several roads being covered, there will be” no school.

In Lincoln County, officials posted: “There will be no school in Lincoln County today (Thursday) due to issues caused by the overnight storms and the possibility of more severe weather and flooding today.

Somerset Independent School officials said they, too, were canceling in-person classes.

The risk of severe weather continues through the weekend.
