Beshear adds 16 more KY counties to FEMA flooding aid request

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear has added 16 more counties to a request for federal assistance following severe flooding last month in the commonwealth.

President Donald Trump has already approved Federal Emergency Management Agency assistance for residents and business owners in several Kentucky counties: Anderson, Butler, Carroll, Christian, Clark, Franklin, Hardin, Hopkins, Jessamine, McCracken, Mercer, Owen and Woodford.

And on Tuesday, Beshear requested the following counties be added to the request:

  • Bullitt
  • Calloway
  • Grayson
  • Hancock
  • Hart
  • Henderson
  • Jefferson
  • Lincoln
  • McLean
  • Meade
  • Nelson
  • Ohio
  • Powell
  • Trimble
  • Warren
  • Webster

However, the request for public assistance and direct federal assistance for 33 other counties and hazard mitigation for the entire state were still pending after Trump’s approval Friday.

Beshear said he is now requesting public assistance for more than 60 counties in all, and he has renewed the request for hazard mitigation for the entire state.

Beshear also said he plans to add 15 more counties to the request later this week.

“As promised, today we are asking President Trump to approve federal aid for additional counties and families affected by April’s floods,” Beshear said in a news release. “These funds are crucial in helping our families and communities rebuild, and we are planning to add even more counties later this week.

“We are committed to making sure our families get the help they need.”

Floodwaters that followed up to 15 inches of rain in some places left seven people dead, damaged homes and businesses, closed hundreds of roads, forced evacuations and led communities to conserve water.

How to apply for FEMA support

Families in the first 13 counties approved for individual assistance can apply for support at a FEMA disaster recovery center. Beshear said centers are open in eight counties, but centers in all counties are expected to be open by Wednesday.

Locations and hours of the disaster recovery centers can be found on the governor’s website.

Residents and business owners who sustained damages and losses in the designated counties can apply for assistance oneline at disasterAssistance.gov or by calling FEMA at 800-621-FEMA (3362). People can also use the FEMA app to apply for assistance.
